Humans tend to return to a steady level of happiness after major highs or lows, a process known as hedonic adaptation. Whether winning the lottery or surviving a life-altering accident, emotional intensity fades and one’s sense of well-being resets to a personal baseline, much like a thermostat regulating temperature.
